Inca trail to Machu Picchu: Salkantay mountain

5 days Alternative Inca trail to Machu Pichhu, Peru
Itinerary : Salkantay mountain (4600m) – Santa Teresa – Machu Picchu

To get to Machu Picchu, my first destination in Peru, I did 5 days the inca trail to Machu Picchu. Of course, you can visit Machu Picchu for one day. But many people choose to arrive there after 4 or 5 days long trail as the inca people did.  Mariana, a Mexican friend of mine came to join me from the 2nd day, we had a wonderful time in the mountains.

The trail we chose was an “alternative” inca trail. Machu Picchu is the most important touistic site in Peru.  There is a classic inca trail. Since there are so many inca trailers. The Peruvian government controls the number of the trailers per day. So to participate a classic inca trail, you should make an inscription 3-4 months in advance.  For those who cannot (or don’t want to )participate the classic inca trail,  there are mzny alternative routes to Machu Pichhu.  We did the Salkantay inca trail , focused on trekking in the mountains.

On the 1st night, we camped in Salkantaypampa (3800m alt).
On the 2nd day, we climbed to the summit of the Salkantay mountain (4600m alt.). The landscape was gorgeous.
I’d never climbed so high. I’d never camped in such a cold place (it got -10°C at night because of the high altitude). It was an “experience” for me.
