Kaiseki in California, what a meal can inspire in your life

Sometimes a word, a piece of thought or even one meal can change your life.
My sister, her husband Michael and I went to a Japanese restaurant in California to have a nice Japanese traditional meal ‘Kaiseki’. It was a week before my departure for Tokyo.
My sister, who had lived in Tokyo for a year, envied me very much to visit Japan.
My sister : “I envy you. You can have the Japanese food everyday.
When I was in Japan, I wished to go to onsen(Japanese hot spring) so badly.”
Me : “Then you can join me.”
My sister : “Shall I? “
Michael : “Well, one week will be fine, if you can bring me at least four bottles of nice sake…”
That was how our trip to Tokyo began.

인생에선 종종 작은 실마리 하나가 큰 변화를 일으킨다. 말 한마디, 생각 한조각 어떨땐 밥 한 끼로…
언니와 형부와 함께 산마태오에 맛집이라고 소문난 일식집에서 가이세키 정식을 먹었다. 내가 일본으로 떠나기 일주일전이었다.
미국에 오기전 일년간 일본에서 유학생활을 한 적이 있는 언니는 도쿄에 가는 나를 많이 부러워했다.
언니 : “좋겠다. 넌 이런 일식도 매일 먹을 수 있겠다. 내가 일본에 있을때 온천 한번 가는 게 소원이었는데……”
나 : “그럼 같이 가”
언니 : “갈까? 마일리지로? 일주일만? (형부에게) 나 가도 될까? “
형부 : “그래, 일주일 정도라면. 그럼 좋은 사케 네 병은 사와야해.”
그렇게 자매의 도쿄여행은 시작되었다.

I did the Castro one. Castro district corresponds Liberal Marais district in Paris. If you’ve seen the movie ‘Milk’, The Castro is where Harvey Milk lived.

샌프란시스코 도서관에서 주최하는 샌프란시스코 여러 지역에 대한 가이드 투어가 있다. 그중에서 자유롭고 진보적인 동네로 알려진 카스트로 지역 투어를 했다. 동성연애자의 인권를 위해 애썼던 하비 밀크가 살았던 카스트로… 뭐든 ‘이야기’가 있으면 흥미롭다.. 밋밋하기 쉬운 지역 가이드 투어도 하비밀크라는 이야기 거리로 흥미로워졌다.

마리오 보타 대칭건물은 뭔가 장난스러운 구석이 있으면서도, 개인적으로 징그럽다는 생각이 들 정도로 권위적인 포스를 뿜는다. 근데 내부 마감은 항상 깔끔하고 완벽해서, 뭔가 ‘삐까뻔쩍하면서도 디자인스러운’ 건물을 꿈꾸는  CEO들에게서 사랑받는 건축가가 아닌가 싶다. (강남 교보문고, 리움미술관의 한동도 보타의 디자인 이다)
